在回顧開始前,送給大家組織行為學教授富萍萍老師的一句祝願:“學以成人 Learn to be Human.” 讓我們共同期待在明天遇見更好的自己!

馬丁∙洛克特院長

商學院院長馬丁∙洛克特教授首先作了開場緻辭,他向在場的同學指出了三點未來步入職場時可能會遇到的問題。一是大學時期制定的計劃可能趕不上社會變化;二是一個工作可能會持續很長一段時間,使人厭倦;三是延長了的退休時間使得同學們需要工作更久。如何應對未知的變幻?洛克特教授認為最重要的是在大學裡學會如何學習。

洛克特教授的職業經曆非常豐富,在衆多管理經曆中,他挑選了零售業和咨詢業為例分享了一些心得體會。在零售業,要面對千變萬化的狀況,員工要扮演的角色也會因此各不相同,而不同的工作往往大相徑庭,這就意味着你要時刻敏捷觀察周圍變化,做相應調整,并且保持學習能力,去應對不同的情況或者工作。此外零售業很注重細節管理,同時這是個高壓行業,對人際關系處理能力有較高要求。但是從事零售業會給你帶來很多收獲:比如獲得細節管理經驗,學會如何與人打交道,如何與人協商,以及了解如何合理分工的重要性。

洛克特教授将咨詢行業分為三類:戰略咨詢(需要大量數據處理和分析),商業咨詢(側重某領域或者多領域商務分析)以及IT咨詢(開發大型IT系統)。一個優秀的咨詢者會将他自己塑造成思路清晰的形象;資料分析能力、批判性思維、歸納能力等都決定了你是否能把咨詢工作做好。

最後洛克特教授給了同學們三條建議:1.明确自己想要的是什麼;2.做好從基層做起的準備;3.為你的顧客着想

劉任遠教授

劉任遠教授分享的主題是“我的職業生涯經驗”。他1993年前往加拿大留學,和普通學生一樣,打零工賺生活費。畢業後,他找到了寶潔的工作,之後又在Unison等公司工作過,還創過業。經驗豐富的劉教授指出,大公司的好處是給你很好很系統的學習環境,也能接觸到優秀的人,總體待遇也不錯。但是任何工作都有其辛苦的一面,往往不為人知。劉教授曾經連軸出差,而大公司的工作環境其實是不是想象中的那麼光鮮。慢慢地,劉教授也發現在工作與生活中較難找到平衡,因此他毅然從大公司辭職,拿着獎學金去英國讀博并發現學術圈的工作才是最适合自己的。

劉教授從個人經驗中提煉出幾個觀點:一,不要過分理想化未來的工作;二,要抓住所有可能的機會去學習;三,不要以賺錢為目的而去選擇工作;四,從來沒有完美的工作。

李磊博士

李磊博士在開場時首先問了大家一個問題:“為什麼大家今天來聽分享?” 他利用楊緻遠、馬雲以及黃大發等人的例子解釋了成功的定義。他認為成功是掌握在自己手中的,即使失敗很多次,隻要保持着熱情,并且持之以恒,就有實現成就的可能。此外,李磊博士認為成功的一個标準要看所做的事是否能對他人産生正面影響。

李磊博士接着談到了目标。他認為很多學生制定的目标與計劃總是趨同并不是一個好現象,每個人都應該有自己的發展方向。像許多成功人士一樣,應該有一個讓自己甘願奮鬥的目标。此外,李磊博士認為學生應該多注重積累工作經驗,從實習做起,并且可以考慮先積累工作經驗再出國留學。最後,李磊博士建議同學們了解自己與周圍,同時将學習作為一個終身的過程

穆斯梅爾博士

穆斯梅爾博士在開場時給了同學們一個問題,你的目标是什麼?在他看來,目标可以分為對外目标和對内目标。所謂對外目标,即是你想要什麼;所謂對内目标,即是你需要什麼。

當你去實習或得到一份工作,你應思考你的雇主需要什麼,而你又需要什麼;當你清楚你需要什麼,這将成為你的優勢。

你需要時刻保持好奇心,盡管工作中的新鮮事并不多。同時,學習是一生都應堅持的事。教授不僅會教授關于經濟學的知識,也會着眼于倫理道德等各方面知識。學習很重要,清楚你自身的需要也很重要,做出選擇時,應權衡怎麼适合自己,什麼能收獲你想要的東西。不要為自己的職業發展設立一個絕對的邊界,選擇自己真正想去追求同時正确的道路。

随後,現場主持人馮昍博士主持了學生和教授們面對面問答環節,針對同學們最感興趣的幾個話題進行深度探讨。比如,就在校大學生創業是否是個明智的選擇這一話題,教授們提出創業需要大量的知識和經驗,而這恰恰是在校大學生所欠缺的。但是,每個人的背景不同,有些同學也許對某一領域已有深刻的了解。因此,創業與否應因人而異。無論是創業還是就業,都需要注重培養個人的企業家精神,讓自己在工作中更積極主動。其次,教授們對是先工作還是先讀研這一熱點話題也給出了各自觀點。總體而言,教授們認為,選擇任何一條路都有利有弊。讀研會造成經濟壓力,且需要花費1-2年的時間。有時候在就業市場中,本科生反而更有競争力。碩士畢業生在工資待遇上的差别與有一定工作經驗的本科生相比也并無明顯優勢。鑒于中國競争激烈的就業市場,教授們認為,即使讀研也要注重工作經驗的積累。學生也可以考慮申請帶有實習機會的碩士項目。比如甯諾的專業會計碩士項目,在獲得學位同時也有工作經驗的積累。

關于職業、關于夢想、關于未來,希望每一個同學都能在這次活動中有所收獲,找到你們真正理想的職業, 追随自己畢生追求的事業。

2017 NUBS China Career Talk was held in the Lord Dearing Building last week, attracting estimated 500 students to sign up for the event. Five professor speakers and NUBS faculty members shared their experience in various industries with students. Now let’s have a brief review about the Career Talk event.

Prof. Martin Lockett

At the beginning of the event, Professor Martin Lockett presented a welcoming speech. He raised some critical changes in today and future workplace: 1. Career plan may not work for some of the future jobs. 2. One may have to stay in one company for a longer period. 3. One’s career will be longer due to the postponing of retirement.

Professor Lockett has worked in various fields and have collected multiple managerial experience in different industries. Among his rich experience, he selected the retail and consulting industry as an example to share with students. In the retail industry, to face the ever-changing situation, employees will have different roles to play. This means that you need to keep abreast of the changes around you, adapt accordingly, and maintain your learning ability. In addition, the retail industry places great emphasis on detail management. At the same time, it is a high-pressure industry that has high requirements on interpersonal skills. Doing business in retailing can bring you many things: getting experience in detail management, learning how to deal and negotiate with people and distribute work properly.

Professor Lockett pointed out that there are three types of consulting jobs: Strategic Consulting (requires extensive data processing and analysis skills), Business Consulting (focusing on one field or multiple fields of business analysis), and IT Consulting (developing large IT systems). An excellent consultant has sharp mind. Moreover, to do the work well, one needs to have superior data analysis ability, critical thinking and inductive ability.

In conclusion, Professor Lockett gave students three suggestions: 1.know what you want. 2. Prepare to start in frontlines. 3. Remember who is paying your salary: always think about customers.

Prof. Martin Liu

Professor Martin Liu shared his career path with students. He went to Canada in 1993 for study, just like many other students, he took odd jobs for living. After graduation, he found a job in P&G, and later worked in big companies such as Unison. He had also co-founded several firms himself.

Professor Liu pointed out that the benefits of working in big companies include systematic learning environments, accesses to high profile people and good compensations and benefits; however, every job has its shortcomings. Professor Liu was frequently on business trips, and the working environment of big companies was actually not as nice as he imagined. Gradually, Professor Liu found it hard to keep a balance between work and personal life. As a result, he resigned from his job. While pursuing his PhD with a scholarship in the U.K., ProfessorLiu found that working in the academic field is most suitable forhim. based on his personal experiences, Professor Liu gave students the following suggestions: 1.Don‘t idealize your future career; 2. Seize every opportunity to learn; 3.Don’t choose career based on how much you will make; 4. There is no perfect job.

Dr. Lei Li

Dr. Lei Li started his speech by a question, why are you here? He then explained the different definitions of success using the examples of Jerry Yang, Jack Ma, and Huang Dafa.Hebelieved that success is in one’s own hand and may not come atonce. You may need to encounter multiple obstacles. However, passionand persistence can eventually take you toward the success. Dr. Lialso emphasized that one shall measures success by looking at whatimpact he/she has made on other people.

Dr. Lei Li then talked about goals. He believes it is not right for students to have similar goals or plans. Everyone should have his/her own direction. In addition, Dr. Li highlighted the importance of internships. It would be a good idea to have some work experience by having an internship before studying abroad. In conclusion, Dr. Li suggested students to get to know about themselves and their environments, and see learning as a lifelong process.

Dr. Dirk Moosmayer

What is your goal?According to Dr. Moosmayer, there are external and internal goals. External goal relates to what you want. Internal goals refers to what you need. When you get an internship or job, it is important to consider what your employer needs and what you need. It will be an advantage for you if you know what you truly want. It is also essential for you to stay curious, even if there are few new things to be discovered at your work. Learning is a lifelong process. In college, professors do not only teach about economics, but also look at ethics and other aspects of knowledge. Remember, never set boundaries for your career and choose the path that you are truly interested in.

Afterthe individual sharing, Dr. Xuan Feng hosted the panel discussion.Questions which students are most interested in were discussed.

1. Start a business yourself VS. Find a job

Professors suggested that setting up one's own business requires a great deal of knowledge and experience, which most undergraduate students are lacking. However, everyone comes from different backgrouds, and some students may already have a deep understanding of a certain area. Therefore, whether to start a business or not should vary from person to person. Furthermore, no matter what one does, it is always good to develop one’s entrepreneurship spirit.

2. Master Degree VS. First Job

In general, there are advantages and disadvantages to both options. Going to graduate school may cause financial stress and will take 1-2 years. The difference between the salary of a postgraduate student and the salary of an undergraduate student whohas good work experience is very little. Undergraduates are sometimes even more competitive in the job market. Given the competitive job market in China, professors believe that graduate schools should focus on helping students get work experiences. Students should consider applying for a master program that includes internship opportunities. For example, Master of Professional Accounting program in UNNC has combined degree study with work practice in one programme, enabling students to obtain a degree and at the same time gain work experience.
